Over the past two weeks, we’ve been blessed with some new hip-hop from Gorilla Warfare Tactics, all in anticipation for this day. On April 30th, the trio dropped their mix tape entitled Zoology, and I don’t even know where to begin. Not only did they fail to disappoint, they exceeded every expectation we could imagine. The sophomore release reflects all the hard work the group has put into their music over the past year. The 10 songs, filled with complex and layered beats, deliver a polished rhythmic punch meshed with clever Dilla-lines and samples that make each track a piece of a bigger story, while still ringing true the old school vibe we fell in love with when Temptations first released.
Rather than doing you a disservice by giving my thoughts on the tracks, my advice is to take a listen. This is a mix tape to stay, one that embodies hip-hop at its core. You’ll be humming the tunes everywhere you go, and bumping them even five years from now while you’re driving down the turnpike; GWT will never get old. So breathe it, eat it, feel it, taste it, surround it, dive into it, turn the volume up on it, bump it, memorize it, love it and never stop listening to it.
